Heritage Weekend

Harking back to a tradition that began 70 years ago, and following a suitably respectable interval, it's on again --

Back to BACK-TO's!!!!!

Walhalla Heritage Weekend
... Melbourne Cup Weekend 2009 ...
Saturday October 31st - Sunday November 1st

Put an entry in your diary today!

September 4th, 2009. Towards the end of the 1930s, former residents of Walhalla banded together to run "Back to Walhalla" weekends, chartering trains and buses to the town for a gala day of festivities to celebrate their former mountain community, progressively abandoned after 1915. It was these events that led after the war to the formation of the "Walhalla Improvement League", and from that organization, to the Walhalla Heritage League, the precursor to today's Walhalla Heritage and Development League.

"BACK TO's" going forward

Starting this year, and from 2009 onward, the Walhalla Heritage and Development League intends once again to hold an annual ‘Walhalla Heritage’ or ‘Back to Walhalla’ weekend. This weekend will include an indoor market, local bands playing throughout the town during the weekend, plus Halloween celebrations. Our committee also hopes to have a number of Walhalla's notable buildings open for inspection.

So plan to   B E   T H E R E   for what should be a solid day or two of serious reminiscing about the good old days in our beautiful old gold town! Come along and be amazed at what we've achieved in keeping it alive.

To tell the truth, we're not really expecting too many of the original participants to show up, but if anything, the many thousands of visitors we see ever year suggest to us that there should be even more people out there nowadays who can claim some degree of association with the town.

So if you were born there, or lived there, or your parents were (or did), or your great-great-grandfather was "in the mines" there, or you once thought you knew someone who might once have said that they'd been somewhere near some place that sounded like it could have been Walhalla (or even just wished they had!), come up and see us, now that it's Spring and the valley is again in bloom.

Plan now to be in Walhalla on Saturday, October 31st or November 1st, 2009 for the long-anticipated return of what we hope will again become an annual Walhalla event. You certainly don't have to dress the part, but by all means, feel free to come along dressed in turn-of-the-(last-)century costume, with your straw boaters and parasols in keeping with the Gold Era theme of the day. Or come as you are ...

What the heck! Just COME!!!
